The Grounds of Alexandria

Back so soon? Time for brunch at this famous coffee brewery. Weekends at The Grounds means markets, petting zoo, face-painting fairy, food stalls, a live DJ and an hour and a half wait for a table. You heard me. Not even staring at Kevin Bacon sleep – no matter how adorable – could make the time past faster. The internet is probably saturated with reviews of this place, but it was such a lovely experience I am going to ramble on about it anyways. Prepare yourself for an onslaught of photos. I did not hold back.

Untitled-7Kevin is definitely a crowd pleaser. These photos were actually taken from the day before, when he was up and about. On that note, the images in the header were also taken from the evening before, because let’s face it, you ain’t going to see a patch of ground at the Grounds on a weekend (see what I did there?) Kevin is a late riser and I must admit I found it sad that he lived next to the Bacon and Eggs stand, the smell of which wafted heavily in the air. Aside from the restaurants, there are also take-away food stands selling rolls and finger foods – I didn’t get a closer look because the lines for them were long as well!

The lemonade stand was so adorable! So many strawberries my head was spinning. We had a Lemonade $5 and a Rose Lemonade $6 – I really do not like the scent of roses – it may or may not be triggered by an experience where my friend used half a bottle of rose essence in a batch of cupcakes. Nonetheless, my friend loves it and it is supposedly a sweeter version of the lemonade. I am happy with my good ol’ lemonade; the fizzy and citrus hit gave me the wake up call I greatly needed.

Untitled-4The florist and the Salt Meats Cheese stand I spoke about in my last post. Both so amazing! Yes that divine lump of brown, peppered cheese is the famous Truffle Cheese $10, I’ll be coming back for you one day (Example).

There was an awkward moment when the couple next to us had their buzzer ring and we all leapt up in excitement because we thought it was ours. I think by the time our buzzer rang, my stomach had surpassed the stage of hunger. The first thing we order was a Pear and Mint Juice $8.00 and the Chocolate Milkshake $7.50. The juice was very refreshing and a combination I have never tried before – their fruit juices are seasonal though, so you might come across something different on the menu for your visit. The chocolate milkshake was pretty damn good, and I am surprised we managed to sustain it between the three of us until the end of our meal. I ordered a Chicken Pot Pie $17.00 upon the recommendation of my friend, apologies for the brown on brown on brown photo, I didn’t think to take a photo of the contents because I just dove in and ate it. From what I remember, it was brimming with giant chicken pieces and a flakey crust; so much that I don’t really think you need the side of potato chips. Though you want to because you have to try it with the chilli mayo – so good!

We were faced with the tough decision of choosing dessert. Seriously, it was ridiculous how great everything looked. So many strawberries, it was confusing my thought process. We asked one of the waiters for help and he replied with “everything is crap” – we must get everything. We finally settled for a Strawberry and Custard Tart $7.45 which boasted fresh strawberries and a smooth custard, and the Tiramisu $7.45 made from the Ground’s very own coffee! They looked as good as they taste (we got a cute glass cup from the tiramisu which was nice) and definitely keen to come back and try some more.

Overall, it was a lively and colourful afternoon! Good food, good atmosphere and good people. Probably wouldn’t want to come back on a weekend unless I wake up insanely early and beat the rush. Though in saying that, the markets do make half the experience. Thanks for sticking around! What’s the longest you have ever had to wait for food? Was it worth it?
